Beacon's CEO Speaks About SBIR Success December 16, 2014
SBANE’s Women’s Business Committee sponsored a Boston-based Navy SBIR Outreach event hosted by the law firm Nutter, McClennen & Fish, LLP.  The event was not only successful at exposing the Navy to the strength of the SBANE Women’s Business Network but also reinforced SBANE’s position in the local ecosystem as an SBIR center of expertise.  Mr. Dick McNamara, former Executive Director of PEO Subs and currently of the NAVSEA SBIR Program Office presented a general overview of the SBIR Program and specific details about the Navy’s SBIR Program.  Based on his experience successfully transitioning over $1B of SBIR investments into the submarine community he presented the audience with very practical advice on how to successfully engage in the Navy’s SBIR process.  The Navy also flew 6 SBIR Program Managers in from DC for this event.  They each presented a review of individual SBIR Topics in the currently open Navy SBIR solicitation as well as met individually in structured one-on-one meetings with event participants.

SBANE member company Beacon Interactive Systems CEO, ML Mackey, spoke about their transitions of SBIR investments to Navy customers as well as how to successfully leverage the generated IP into the private sector and spin-out companies.  SBANE member law firm Nutter, McClennan & Fish, LLC sponsored and hosted the event in their event space in the Seaport District.  Due to the success and overwhelming interest generated at this event, Nutter committed to provide a related follow-up SBANE event about to how successfully manage the IP that results from SBIR investments.

As a commitment to the SBANE WBN, the NAVSEA SBIR Program office has promised to return to Boston this Spring to meet with any attendees of this event who submit proposals from either a Woman Owned Small Business or with a woman Primary Investigator on their proposal.  This debrief effort is part of an ongoing commitment from the NAVSEA SBIR Program Office to increase the participation of women in the Navy’s SBIR Program.

SBANE was pleased to host this event and support the Navy in ongoing outreach efforts into the New England Innovation Economy.
